Course Introduction

Academic English Course for Higher Education

The Academic English Course for Higher Education is designed to assist students in reaching an upper-intermediate level of English. Emphasis is on accuracy and fluency in the four macro skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

The teaching of grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, style and register is integrated into the four macro skills as presented in the core textbooks used in the course. Skills that you have acquired in earlier English studies will be revisited to consolidate your skills and to develop more linguistic complexity and variety such aspractising colloquial English.

During the course you will be required to give an oral presentation, participate in class discussions, and submit pieces of writing. You will also be encouraged to develop independent learning strategies.

In this course there is an emphasis on the development of more complex writing skills that are required to undertake higher education studies. A range of text types will be studied such as argumentative writing where you will be taught to state a position and use the language of persuasion. Another text type that will be covered is expository writing where you will practise a writing technique of comparing and contrasting as well as the language of “Cause and Effect”. Examples of texts that will be studied are business correspondence, emails and reports.

The course is designed to build and develop your confidence and ability to interact in English. In addition, it will equip you with general English language skills as well as advanced study skills that will prepare you to undertake further studies that are delivered in English.
